The Enrichment Project® is a therapeutic animal-assisted activities program which promotes progress toward personalized therapy goals through the process of designing and creating enrichment projects for rescued animals. Enrichment is an integral part of animal care used by zoos, aquariums and sanctuaries. Enrichment activities and objects are designed to provide animals with ways to use their cognitive and physical skills, encourage species appropriate behaviors and present choices for environmental exploration.

Participants engage in several program components including developing project ideas, shopping for supplies, building the projects and visiting an animal care facility to provide enrichment sessions for the animals. The process of developing, building and sharing the projects promotes positive self-esteem and socialization. The program approach is also individually tailored to address each participants’ unique needs and therapy goals often involving cognition, motor skills and community re-integration.

Participants are motivated to work on activities that are challenging during sessions and value the opportunity to give back to others who have also endured traumatic experiences and injuries. One participant expressed that “the animals are like me because they have been through a lot”. Another participant shared that he felt it was “very caring for us to see the dolphins and other fish especially because they were also injured where they lived.”

The nature of The Enrichment Project® allows participants to work toward their goals, while empowering them to be able to help others with whom they share common ground, even in the most unexpected ways.

A portion of proceeds from the project are donated to the animal care facility toward enrichment and other animal care needs in furtherance of their mission.

We welcome collaboration with animal care facilities! If you are interested in becoming an Enrichment Project community partner please contact us!
